Speaker:
Dr. Roy Bendor

You’re invited to a talk by Dr. Roy Bendorwho is currently a Research Associate at The University of British Columbia's Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability, and lecturer at the School of Communication, Simon Fraser University.

In recent years the use of digital, interactive media to engage the public on sustainability has grown exponentially, as web-based and mobile applications prove essential to efforts by businesses, government and activists to promote more sustainable lifestyles and policies. In this presentation he will trace the ways in which environmental communicators have addressed these media, and offer an alternative approach that foregrounds the mediating capacities of digital technologies – the ways in which they modulate users’ perception of the world, themselves and others; mobilize certain understandings of sustainability; and, consequently, enable or foreclose different paths of action on the environment. He will demonstrate this approach by looking at a variety of digital media including serious games, decision-support tools, and an interactive installation.
