1. Minimum Admission Requirements

For Master of Arts (MA) Applicants

Four-year baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from the University of Calgary or a recognized institution. Degrees and grades from foreign institutions are evaluated for their equivalency to those of the University of Calgary. Transcripts should indicate a grade point average in the final two years of study of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent. International requirements for admission

For Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Applicants

Master's degree or its equivalent from the University of Calgary or a recognized institution. Degrees and grades from foreign institutions are evaluated for their equivalency to those of the University of Calgary. Transcripts must indicate a grade point average in the final two years of study of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent. International requirements for admission

English Language Proficiency

Proficiency in the English language is essential for the pursuit and successful completion of graduate programs at the University of Calgary. Prior to admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, an applicant whose primary language is not English may fulfill the English language proficiency requirement in one of the following ways:

  • By writing the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and obtaining a minimum score of at least 600 (written test) or 100 (internet-based test). Applications may be obtained from the TOEFL website. When requesting that official test results are forwarded to the University of Calgary, indicate the institution code 0813 and the code appropriate to the graduate program, as listed on the TOEFL website.

Exemptions

Students who have degrees from universities where the primary language of instruction was English are exempt from having to prove English language proficiency. Your degree certificate and/or transcripts should specify that the language of instruction is English.

2. Completing the Online Application

Correspondence from the University of Calgary will be sent to your email account. Please ensure that you check your email account periodically for messages. Within 24-48 hours of submitting your application for admission your University of Calgary Identification number (UCID) will be emailed to you. Once you have received your UCID number through email, you should review your application status by logging onto the myUofC portal and accessing your online Student Centre to find out which transcripts and additional documents are required in support of your application. 

You will need to upload the following documents/information to your application after you have submitted it online. Please do not send these documents through regular mail - they should be uploaded into your application as PDF files no later than January 15. 

  • Research Proposal outlining the area and focus of your intended research (250 -500 words for MA application; 750-1000 words for PhD application)
  • Current curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Two (2) samples of your written work. Writing samples should be academic and be between 10-15 pages each. Please upload both writing samples in one PDF document. 
  • 1 (1) set of unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended

Online Reference Forms

We require two (2) academic online reference forms.

The appropriate link with the official documents and instructions will be forwarded to your referees with the reference request. It is recognized that references are supplied in confidence. Referees will not be notified until you submit your application. References are valid for one year from the date on the reference.

3. After Completing the Online Application

Only the following documents should be received in our office before the January 15 deadline:

  • Two (2) sets of official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. Official transcripts must be received in signed and sealed envelopes from the institution. You can request to have institutions send these transcripts directly to our office. 
  • English Language Proficiency Test Scores (if needed).

Note: Applicants must pay the non-refundable application fee before their application can be evaluated: CDN $125 for Canadian citizens and permanent residents, or CDN $145 for international students who will be attending on a Study Permit.
