Oscar-nominated Deepa Mehta - 'The Anatomy of Violence', 2016 Canwest Global Lecture

The Department of Communication, Media and Film are very excited to announce that Oscar-nominated screenwriter, director, and producer Deepa Mehta will speak at the University of Calgary this February.

Her visually lush and emotionally resonating films have played at every major international film festival; receiving numerous awards and accolades, and have been distributed around the world. She has received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Order of Ontario and Queen’s Jubilee Medal. She was also made an Officer of the Order of Canada for “challenging cultural traditions and bringing stories of oppression, injustice and violence to the fore.”

Wednesday, February 3rd, 3:00 p.m. Earth Sciences, Room 162

Deepa Mehta is the director of numerous internationally acclaimed films including Sam & Me (1991), Fire (1996) and the Academy Award-nominated Water (2005). 

Ms. Mehta’s lecture - 'The Anatomy of Violence', will explore the nature of violence as it has informed her work, and in relation to issues of gender and identity.

There will also be a public screening of her latest movie 'Beeba Boys' where Deepa Mehta will be in attendance for a Q&A Discussion after the movie -
