MA Program

The MA (Master of Arts) is a thesis-based program that will allow students to apply for PhD programs or to pursue careers in which research, writing and speaking skills are essential.  Students are expected to complete the Master’s degree in 2 years of full-time study.

Program Requirements

Current MA Program requirements for students entering the Communication and Media Studies (CMMS) program:

  • 3 core courses:  COMS 601, COMS 613, and COMS 615
  • 3 elective courses (see graduate courses for course descriptions)
  • Thesis 112 (mandatory but non-credit)
  • Thesis: students spend the second year of their programs researching and writing their theses
  • Thesis defense: an oral examination based on the thesis

To apply for graduate studies with the Department of Communication, Media and Film, you must apply to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. We will begin accepting applications for Fall 2018 on September 1, 2017. The deadline to apply is January 15, 2018. Applying early is highly recommended.
