Current research projects

  • Social media and grass-roots civic engagement in Canada.
  • The discursive construction of social media in the case of the 2010 municipal election in Calgary. A spin-off of the project focuses on authenticity through social media.
  • Subcultural approaches to games: cultural resistance and hegemonic re-appropriation in the case of Final Fantasy.
  • Visual markers of banal nationhood: a comparative study of Bucharest and Calgary.
  • Mapping the #idlenomore Twitterverse.

I am interested in supervising honours and graduate projects focusing on any aspects of the social context of new media. I am also interested in work around nationalism and representation, with an emphasis on banal nationalism.
