Research
I am interested in the political and social implications of digital media, particularly in relation to poverty and inequality. My research consolidates my interests in media, politics, governance, and activism. My current work considers how uses of big data are changing governance and activism. I am now investigating how the Canadian government is using big data analysis. I focus on how big data uses are influencing social services and policy advice systems. I am beginning a project that investigates and compares how big data analysis is informing government decision making practices in the United Kingdom and the United States. In other work I have analysed news coverage of poverty, and questioned the democratic potential of online news and social media platforms.

I have held fellowships at the Infoscape Centre for the Study of Social Media, Ryerson University, Toronto and at the Goldsmiths Leverhulme Media Research Centre, London UK.
