CMF Welcomes Victor Pickard on March 7th

The Department of Communication, Media and Film is excited to have the opportunity to host Victor Pickard, PhD. for a guest lecture on March 7th, 2019 as a part of our Connections: The CMF Speaker Series lineup. Dr. Pickard is a leading global communications scholar across a range of fields at the intersection of media and democracy. At this moment of enormous upheaval in American government and media, Dr. Pickard offers insightful research on how the U.S. got to this precarious point in its history, as well as potential avenues to create a more responsive and engaged media system.   

His talk, The Rise of the Misinformation Society, will focus on the ongoing collapse of commercial journalism and the policies necessary for establishing public alternatives.

Victor Pickard, Ph.D. is an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication. His research focuses on the history and political economy of media institutions, media activism, and the politics of media policy. He has published dozens of scholarly articles and book chapters, and he writes for popular outlets such as The GuardianThe Huffington PostThe NationJacobin, and The Atlantic. He has authored or edited five books, including America’s Battle for Media DemocracyMedia Activism; Will the Last Reporter Please Turn Out the Lights; andAfter Net Neutrality: A New Deal for the Digital Age. Currently he is finishing a book on the political economy of digital journalism.
